CSU San Marcos Tells Statewide and National Audiences
about ProjectEDGE
2/11/01 - At recent statewide and national conferences the Planning, Design and Construction Department at Cal State San Marcos presented how they have streamlined their management process on $58M worth of major projects in 2001 with ProjectEDGE. Colleges and universities are being squeezed between tight budgets, growing enrollments and an increased need for specialized space. Campuses considered the benefits of new project management tools at two recent conferences in California. Cal State San Marcos traveled to both conferences in the same week to tell others about the ProjectEDGE collaborative project management system. Use of the system at San Marcos' rapidly expanding campus has significantly improved record keeping, document accuracy, information organization and availability on $58M worth of major projects. More than 50 universities from across the country were represented at the Tradeline College, University & Medical School Facilities Conference in San Diego November 12th - 14th. The Planning Design & Construction department of Cal State San Marcos presented on how they have used ProjectEDGE to streamline their major projects. Later the same week, they traveled to the Electronic Project Management Tools In The New Millennium conference sponsored by the California State University Chancellor's Office at Cal State Hayward. The conference was exclusively for Cal State and U of C schools to explore how project management software can improve the way they manage capital projects. According to David Dennis, Assistant Director of Construction, San Marcos has used ProjectEDGE's web-based system on three major projects, including a $22M Science and Arts Building and a $34M Library Information Center. They selected ProjectEDGE's web-based system to track, manage, coordinate and prioritize the information flow between consultants, designers, contractors and subs. “[ProjectEDGE] keeps all parties appraised of priority items and provides a viable framework for managing the construction process..........quickly and with a high degree of integrity”. ProjectEDGE's quick overview of information means early warning of potential cost issues and schedule delays. ProjectEDGE has also significantly reduced the staff's administrative duties such as the faxing, mailing and filing of documents. They also shared several unanticipated benefits from using ProjectEDGE. The system made it easy to find any type of information with a fully searchable database. They talked about how useful ProjectEDGE was in tracking and documenting cost issues that arose during construction. They credited ProjectEDGE with making it easy for the project team to be “on the same page”. As they continue their campus expansion, San Marcos intends to use the "(ProjectEDGE) system on every construction project as a consistent record keeping method."
